For insurers, creating a top-notch digital experience goes beyond just policy management. Many are thinking "outside the box" and creating non-core insurance capabilities in order to build affinity among customers and prospects. For P&C insurers, who offer homeowners and renters coverage, one such alternate approach are digital inventory capabilities that give the user an ability to log their possession in case of a loss.

"Doing a home inventory is a pain, but all of these organizations have taken interesting steps to make the process easier for consumers, drive a different kind of engagement and position themselves as a trusted partner for consumers," says Forrester Research analyst Ellen Carney.

Insurance & Technology gathered five such apps and asked Carney for her opinion on them.
