First American Names Court President

The former COO has been with the company since 1999.

First American Property and Casualty Insurance Group (Santa Ana, Calif.) named 2006 Insurance & Technology Elite 8 honoree James Court president of the company.

Court's appointment, which took effect at the end of June, follows seven years as SVP and COO in charge of operational strategy and IT initiatives.

“Jim is a proven leader and I look forward to working with him to position our company for continued success,” said Larry Davidson, division president, First American Specialized Groups, in a statement.

I recall hearing recently that eventually, all business leaders will need to have some kind of IT background in order to effectively lead through the digital age. Good for First American getting started on the trend, and congrats to Jim on his new position.

It's always great to see someone with achievements on the IT/operations side of the business assume "run the company" responsibilities -- congrats to Jim Court. We often write about that opportunity, but there aren't so many real-world examples in insurance. However, with more business functions such as marketing, channel management/distribution and risk management becoming technology focused, that probably will change in the coming years. Technology prowess will become part of the necessary credentials for being an insurance president/CEO.
