Horace Mann Restructures to Spur Product Development

The company has appointed a new head of its P&C business as well as an SVP for personal lines.

As a part of a restructuring effort aimed at increased product development, Horace Mann Educators Corporation, a Springfield, Ill-based company that focuses on insurance and financial needs for teachers, has appointed Stephen P. Cardinal as EVP of property and casualty.

In addition to increasing product output, Cardinal's other responsibilities include strategy and operations and helping the company achieve financial goals, according to a release. The company's particular goals include "the development of a full suite of products that protect the short term risks of educator customers throughout their lifetime," according to a release.

Additionally, William J. Caldwell, Jr. has joined the company as SVP of personal lines. Caldwell’s previous experience includes Head of Property Product at QBE and SVP of Product Management at BofA.

“As we continue to look at structure of our organization and weigh it against the needs and challenges of our strategic direction, the distribution and marketing functions that previously reported to Steve will report directly to me,” says Marita Zuraitis, president and CEO at Horace Mann, in a statement.

Zuraitis adds, “these changes put us on the right path to achieve our vision of being a more dominant player, providing top tier customer experiences and delivering segmented products to our educator customer base.”

Cardinal has succeeded Thomas C. Wilkinson, who will retire at the end of the year. His other experiences include EVP of Marketing at Horace Mann since 2008 and other positions at MetLife, Allstate and Countrywide Insurance Services.
