MassMutual Adds to Customer Analytics and Research Division

Amit Phansalkar, Sears Merritt and Trevor Morgan will play key roles on the data analytics team.

Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual) has announced three new appointments in its Customer Analytics and Research department.

Amit Phansalkar has been named VP and chief data scientist. Phansalkar most recently served as the global head of data sciences and advanced analytics at Kantar Media. In his fifteen years of big data experience, he has also worked as co-founder and VP of analytics at Cognika. Phansalkar will lead the MassMutual data analytics division in developing insights to improve the company’s customer experience strategy.

Sears Merritt will fill the role of assistant VP and data scientist. Merritt has almost a decade of working with big data systems and modeling complex systems. He most recently served as a consulting data scientist and researcher at the University of Colorado.

In addition, MassMutual has named Trevor Morgan a consultant for its data analytics division. Morgan previously worked as an analyst and data scientist for a market research company.

“These gentlemen bring another level of depth to MassMutual’s ability to access, analyze and interpret massive amounts of non-traditional data to help us make the right decisions to continuously improve the experiences our customers have with us,” said Michael Fanning, executive VP and head of MassMutual’s U.S. Insurance Group.

Interesting, that does seem to be what they're going for. With these new members, MassMutual has a strong analytics team - good way to start off the new year.

re: MassMutual Adds to Customer Analytics and Research Division
At the end of last year there were a lot of questions about how big data should be "owned" within the organization Gă÷ whether it was something the CIO should fold into his or her responsibilities or new titles should be created. I know Bob Casale is very involved in these initiatives, so maybe MassMutual is looking toward a more hybrid model.
