First Medical Health Plan of Puerto Rico (Arecibo, Puerto Rico) has deployed systems from Bellevue, Wash.-based Edifecs and Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft to improve its HIPAA compliance, the companies announced June 10.
First Medical is using Edifecs' XEngine and SpecBuilder, as well as Microsoft's BizTalk Server 2009, SQL Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008. Infocorp, a Uruguay-based IT vendor with offices in Puerto Rico, collaborated on the implementation.
While its primary objective was to achieve the Level 1 and Level 2 compliance deadlines mandated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, First Medical also hopes to improve transaction processing performance and visibility and address support issues, according to a statement from company IT director Melvin Velez.
"The Edifecs-Microsoft joint solution … addresses our serious challenges with performance, product support, and 5010 transaction standards support in our existing systems," he says.
