Uncovering Value

Joseph Cooper, EVP and CIO, Manulife

When Joe Cooper stepped into his current roles as Manulife's CIO and EVP for global services in 2007, he began to implement a global strategy. His efforts, which earned him Elite 8 honors in 2011, have captured huge efficiency gains, driven service improvements, and saved the company more than $100 million.

While Cooper's extensive responsibilities haven't changed over the past year, he continues to find new ways to contribute. Cooper still is in charge of all of Manulife's infrastructure services, application services and information and risk management, overseeing close to 3,000 people in the U.S., Canada and Asia as well as staff of about 3,000 in the areas of business processing and application services in facilities in Manila, Kuala Lampur, Malaysia and China. His global procurement requires him to oversee close to $2 billion in third-party expenditures.

"We continue to look across all those different functions, ... focusing on creating more global subject matter experts in each of the disciplines," Cooper remarks, noting that Manulife is investing more heavily than it has in the past in business process management. Looking ahead, he adds, "Driving to more of a service-oriented culture across the function of global information services is a top focus. We're not only there to deploy technology, but to deliver service to the enterprise."
