Sprint Network to Power HIMEX Turnkey UBI Services

The wireless carrier and telematics insurance provider have announced an infrastructure partnership.

Vendors are starting to ramp up their capabilities as telematics-powered usage-based insurance becomes more popular. To that end, Scottsdale, Ariz.-based HIMEX has signed Sprint (Overland Park, Kan.) to a five-year agreement under which the latter will provide the wireless infrastructure for the former's turnkey usage-based insurance programs.

HIMEX provides a gamified usage-based insurance product that includes "devices, product platform, systems integration, logistics, mobile apps, data management and analytics; and supports the full range of insurance company transactions from quoting and sales through first notice of loss and claims settlement," the company claims.

“We chose Sprint as our CDMA carrier partner providing us with a common infrastructure across personal and commercial lines," said Neil Fishenden, SVP business development, HIMEX, in a statement. "Sprint’s investment in its all-new 3G and 4G LTE network, along with their commitment to maintaining 2G service, has led us to jointly deliver insurers with flexible and scalable solutions to meet the demands of an increasingly data-reliant industry today and in the future.”

Sprint has been courting aggressively the UBI market through partnerships with both vendors and insurance companies since the launch of its Integrated Insurance Platform last year.

Working with HIMEX to deliver complete, end-to-end UBI solutions to insurance companies is just one more way we’re leveraging our insurance and telematics expertise while extending the value of our network,” added Kimberly Green-Kerr, regional vice president, Sprint, in a statement. “Sprint is continually improving the speed and quality of our wireless footprint as part of our nationwide Network Vision build out which is transforming mission critical business applications that used to run on fixed computer terminals. Now those same transactions are conducted via cell phones and tablets by customers and agents on the go, while remotely connected machines monitor and maintain a variety of functions.”
